How to Clean Makeup Brushes

Makeup brushes can get surprisingly dirty. Each time you use a brush, it picks up small amounts of dirt, oil, and makeup debris. Not only does that mean trouble for your skin (hello, breakouts), it can also deteriorate the brush's quality and performance.

Having clean and well-maintained brushes ensures streak-free and flawless application of your favorite makeup products. The less buildup your brush bristles have, the better your makeup will look! 

Cleaning your brushes regularly will keep them soft, fresh and working well for years to come! We recommend cleaning your brushes every 1-2 weeks depending on how frequently they’re used.

Suggested brush cleansers:

We recommend investing in a high quality brush cleanser. Avoid using cleansers that contain colors that might stain your brush fibers, or cleansers with alcohol content that might weaken the glue.

Cleaning Instructions:

STEP 1.
Start with water that’s just warm enough to break up any existing product on the brush — be careful not to use hot water as this can damage the glue that holds the bristles in the ferrule and cause shedding.
STEP 2.
Run the brush fibers under the water until they are fully wet. Make sure to hold them at a downward angle to avoid having water seep into the ferrule. Avoid soaking/submerging the full brush in water, as this can cause the bristles to loosen from the ferrule. Focus on only wetting the brush fibers and not the ferrule/handle.
STEP 3.
Using the brush cleaner of your choice (see above  for our suggested products), apply the cleanser to either the palm of your hand (liquid formula) or directly to the wet brush fibers (solid cleanser) and swirl the head of the brush on the palm of your hand with light to medium pressure. Rinse out, and repeat until the water runs clear.
STEP 4. 
Gently squeeze out all of the excess water, reshape the head of the brush, and lay flat on an absorbent towel to dry. Do not stand upright until brushes  are completely dry (should take about 24hrs depending on the brush size and density.

Top brush care tips:

  1. Do not submerge your brushes in water or alcohol. This can weaken the glue in the ferrule that holds the bristles together. 
  2. Do not use hot water to clean your brushes.
  3. Do not swirl/scrub the brushes too hard. This may damage fibers or cause brushes to lose their shape. 
  4. Let your brushes dry completely before storing them in an upright position.
